About Me

Kristin Uhlemeyer

Hello! I am a curious and thoughtful educator who loves learning. I believe a teacher should grow every year as much as his or her children. I have taken Ms. Frizzle’s quote to heart: “Take chances, make mistakes, get messy.”

Philosophy Statement

I have a unique perspective on education because I earned a masters in museum education and worked in alternative learning spaces for many years. At dynamic institutions like the Academy of Sciences and SF State University Museum, I developed a love of place-based learning and hands- on engagement with artifacts, animals, and art.

Later, when I began teaching in the classroom, I deepened my love for the Reggio Emilia pedagogy with extensive training (including a visit to Reggio Emilia, Italy). I also developed a foundation in Maker Education by working alongside engineers at AltSchool as we prototyped software together. Inquiry-based learning (at the center of both Reggio and Maker pedagogies) demonstrates that there is always more to learn.

Every year of teaching creates new opportunities to view the world in unique ways.  As long as we have a curious heart and a desire to listen, we can learn from anyone; age does not matter. My favorite part of teaching is encouraging children’s questions as they make sense of their world.

At international schools, I personally grew from living and working with cultures unique from my own. I strongly believe in cultivating a relationship between family, school and student, no matter where I live. I love creating a community of learners as we co-construct knowledge through play and projects.

Through imaginative inquiries designed with the students’ interests in mind, every student can access learning objectives that are developmentally appropriate for their own needs while contributing to a mutual goal. The sense of pride that students feel, not just in their own accomplishments but also in the work of their peers, is more impactful than any standardized test.

I hope to find employment at a school which values whole-child learning and appreciates the joy of curiosity and inquiry.
